Small spaces often require a different way of thinking.

With most of this backyard dedicated to a deck and only a narrow planting strip beneath mature arborvitae, traditional garden beds offered limited opportunities for planting. Instead, we transformed the deck itself into a garden through the thoughtful use of containers.

A layered collection of trees, shrubs, perennials, and evergreen accents creates year-round beauty while preserving space for outdoor living. Containers were carefully positioned to create interest from every angle, including the views enjoyed from inside the home.

The result is a garden that extends beyond the ground plane—a lush, personal retreat where plants, pottery, and architecture come together to create beauty in every season.
